DESCRIPTION

The Clumber Spaniel is massive, first and foremost a gun dog, they may look heavy and stubby, but are very good hunters. They have broad square head, wide across the top with a brownish or flesh colored nose. The neck is thick, heavy, and feathered at the throat, and the tail is short-fringed. Dewclaw should be removed. Their shoulders are robust and muscular. Limbs are short, straight and strong-boned. The hair is thick, silky and straight in pure white with lemon or orange markings. These dogs have a feathered coat and their tails are customarily docked, however docking is illegal in most of the European countries. Coat color is predominantly white, with either lemon or orange markings. Sometimes they are named as the "Gentleman's Gun Dog", they are the largest of all spaniels. They are friendly, affectionate, intelligent but sometimes reserved. This breed makes an ideal companion for an active elderly person or a family with children. Clumber Spaniels do have a tendency to be lazy if left alone, but will always be ready to join a walk or go hunting.

TEMPERAMENT

The Clumber Spaniel is described as a gentle, sweet, quite intelligent and pleasant dog. These dogs are very affectionate and playful. Well-behaved, and not very active when mature. The Clumber Spaniels will get along with other dogs and cats as well as other household animals if they are raised with them. They tend to be a one person dog and can be a bit willful. They are usually trustworthy with children of the family, but they do not make friends easily with strangers. This breed is a gentle person's dog. These dogs have a good memory and like to please their master, thus training is not usually difficult. When they are puppies, may be submissive urinators. They can be used as hunting dogs, prefer to hunt for pheasant and partridges, take naturally to retrieving, and are good water dogs.

GROOMING

The coat is abundant, close and silky. Body coat is dense, straight and flat. Feathering on eyes, legs, belly and tail.

HEALTH

Hip dysplasia, back problems, retinal dysplasia, entropion (turned in eyelids) and ectropion (outward turned eyelids). Other health concerns include allergies, ear problems, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, and intervertebral disc disease.

EXERCISE

Clumber Spaniels are equally suited for apartment or residential dwellings. They require daily exercise such as brisk walks, being bicycling companions, chasing a ball, or swimming. Failure to provide sufficient exercise will cause this breed to become overweight, have muscle atrophy, and shorten their life span.

TRAINING

The Clumber Spaniel learns slower than some other breeds so patience and repetition is required.
