DESCRIPTION
TEMPERAMENT
The Transylvanian Hound is a courageous, consistent, and persistent dog. It is demonstrative and gentle. This dog is somewhat willful and distractible, but very smart and trainable. It makes an excellent gun dog, watchdog, and even guard dog. This breed is gentle, friendly and makes a good family dog. It is very loyal to its family, lively and highly intelligent. It is easy to train. Some of the breed's talents include: tracking, retrieving, pointing, watchdogging. The Transylvanian Hound is known for its keen sense of direction and orientation to the environment. It is adapted to extremes of climate. It is an obedient, trainable, good-natured hound. It is easy to keep. This dog is willing to hunt in forests, mountains, rivers, and in all weathers. It makes a perfect companion to a hunter. The Transylvanian Hound is active, energetic, athletic, and full of stamina; it must receive sufficient exercise. This breed is enthusiastic about exercise; you should provide ample time for activity and exertion. Recent reports indicate that the Transylvanian dogs face extinction with their numbers dangerously low.
GROOMING
Short and coarse. It is easy to keep in peak condition. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
HEALTH
Generally is a healthy breed.
EXERCISE
It can live in an apartment if well trained and properly exercised. It is very active indoors and does best with an average-sized fenced yard.
TRAINING
Tireless, bold, and determined, the Transylvanian Hound has a very keen sense of smell and an acute sense of direction. A versatile hunting dog, he is obedient and docile. He needs firm training.
