DESCRIPTION

The Lakeland Terrier is a solid, sturdy build, squarely proportioned dog similar to the Welsh Terrier, but a bit smaller. This is an elegant breed with a beautiful, elongated head and straight, strongly boned legs. The thick, hard, adult coat is resistant to bad weather and comes in many combinations of black, black & tan, reddish, red grizzle, wheat, liver & blue, grizzle, and grizzle & tan. The tan color is like straw, not rich and dark. Lakeland Terriers generally like everyone they meet and can distinguish friends from strangers. This breed is an enthusiastic breed who enjoys playing with adults or children and has a way of getting its own way, making them an entertaining pet.

TEMPERAMENT

The Lakeland Terrier is a peppy, cheerful, loving and affectionate dog. He/she is alert, courageous and confident. This breed loves children. This dog needs firm training. This breed tends to guard their toys and food. The housebreak may be difficult, but tend to learn quite easily otherwise. The Lakeland Terrier gets along well with other dogs, which is unusual for Terriers. They can be unsure around strangers, but this does not usually become extreme. Socialize them when they are still young with cats and other animals so they do not chase them when they are older.

GROOMING

This breed has a thick, hard coat and sheds water. The Lakeland Terrier should have its coat plucked two or three times each year by pulling the old hair out by hand. The coat of show dogs will require more intensive grooming. This breed sheds little to no hair.

HEALTH

Legg-Perthes disease (degenerative disease of the hip bones), cataracts and lens luxation.

EXERCISE

The Lakeland Terrier's exercise should consist of long walks and a secured backyard to play in. Urban environment or country, they will fit well into any home situation. An apartment is adequate if they are given daily exercise. The best owner for this breed would be an active owner or individual living in the suburbs or country.

TRAINING

Needs to be trained and socialized early in life. An intelligent dog, the Lakeland will learn quickly. Positive training is always better than deterrence or negative training.
