DESCRIPTION
The Basset Hound is a short-legged dog, heavier in bone, size considered, than any other breed of dog. Its movement is humorous looking and slow, but not clumsy. The Basset Hound is essentially a hunting dog with strong natural instincts and will power. It makes a good family companion. The Basset Hound is a lovely and amusing household pet, it’s loyal and obedient to its owner. In temperament it is mild, never sharp or timid. It’s a good-natured dog breed; it gets along well with other pets and children. It is capable of great endurance in the field and is extreme in its devotion.
TEMPERAMENT
The Basset Hound is sweet, gentle, devoted, peaceful and naturally well behaved. It perfectly fits into family life. It’s always friendly with never an indication of sharpness or viciousness. It is incapable of biting, but it may be a bit stubborn. The Basset Hound likes to do tricks for food. It has a deep musical bark. With proper training, it is obedient, but when it picks up an interesting smell, it's sometimes hard to get its attention.
GROOMING
Basset Hound has short, hard and shiny coat. The coat is hard, smooth with sufficient density to be of use in all weather. It requires minimal brushing. The skin is loose and elastic.
HEALTH
Compared to other breeds, Basset Hounds are commonly more healthy. Basset Hounds tends to be obese, but this can and should be controlled with proper diet and exercise. Obesity can cause spine and leg problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Ears are susceptible to infections, as well as the eyes to glaucoma. May suffer from bloat and skin infections. Bloat is a health issue to most dogs, being the second largest killer of dogs other than cancer, but Bassets can be particularly susceptible to it because of their deep chests. Puppies are often delivered by cesarean section.
EXERCISE
Plenty of moderate exercise will help keep them fit and trim; long walks or scent games are best for Basset Hounds.
TRAINING
Basset Hounds should be taught basic obedience persistently during their early age as they can be self-willed and when their natural scenting ability tempts them, they will go off in hot pursuit.
